Practicum Experience

The Practicum uses a 5-phase model structured around the construction, implementation, and reflection on a lesson, activity, assignment, or artifact that uses technology to support student learning and engagement. TAs and CAs will acquire expertise and learn to manage complexity within the academic technology domain as they progress through these 5 phases.

PHASE TRAINING AND SUPPORT TIME COMMITMENT
Planning Identify an educational objective to improve or investigate and develop a lesson plan or educational artifact that incorporates technology in its approach. Attend a whole-group overview meeting and subsequent, targeted training sessions convened around and grounded in your selected educational objectives. 3.5 hours in-person (1.5 hours whole group meeting and 2 hours of small-group training). + 4-6 hours individual planning time.
Acting Implement the lesson plan or share the educational artifact in context. Attend a one-on-one coaching session where you practice and receive feedback. 1 hour coaching session +1 hour implementation in context.
Observing Observe the effects of the plan or artifact. Plan and receive guidance on ways to assess effects of your lesson plan or educational artifact. Occurs during coaching session and implementation. May also include 1 hour individual planning time.
Reflecting Reflect on these effects as a basis for further planning and subsequent action. Craft and receive feedback on a written overview and reflection of your Practicum Project. The overview should include a description of your method/design and their reflection. 2-3 hours individual reflection and writing time.
Sharing Share your methods and reflection. Share your work online and during a culminating presentation to the GSE and Stanford community. 1.5 hours participation in panel/presentation.
