I need a website but I'd rather do it myself for free. What are my options?

Stanford University offers free, no-frills, free self-service web production and hosting platforms to official groups and departments. GSE IT will provide free consultations for groups looking to host WordPress and Drupal sites on these platforms.

Stanford AFS

Pros: WordPress platform as a service, managed one-click updates, SSH allowed
Cons: Shared hosting, shared resource pool, full SUNet sponsorship required for outside vendors, official group/department required, vanity host request subject to approval

Stanford Sites

Pros: Drupal platform as a service, robust community for help, Stanford-specific code included, small customizations allowed through Drupal interface
Cons: Shared hosting, shared resource pool, fully locked-down, no custom code allowed, no custom theme allowed, no SSH, no SFTP, vanity host request subject to approval

su.domains

Pros: cPanel as a service, host any WordPress or Drupal or custom PHP/mySQL website, FTP, SSH allowed
Cons: Shared resource, tied to single SUNet, can only use *.su.domains URL or custom domain as opposed to *.stanford.edu vanity host
